Isnembe Secondary School
ABOUT
Isnembe Secondary School is a rural mainstream school which serves primarily a disadvantaged community. This rural setting has rich historical significance as it served for many years as a safe haven for freedom fighter, Mr. Nelson Mandela during the apartheid struggle. Our learners, mostly children of sugar farm labourers on small holdings, struggle to pay any school fees. According to a recent survey conducted by the Department of Education the school was declared a no-fee school. According to the Poverty Index, on a scale of 1 – 5 (1 being the poorest and 5 being the richest), Isnembe Secondary was ranked Quintile 3. This is a clear indication of the demographics in the area. The school caters for learners from Grade R to Grade 9. The school has been registering record breaking enrolment over the last few years .Isnembe Secondary also runs a nutrition programme to cater for the needs of our learners, many of whom cannot afford to bring lunch to school. Our school has stood proudly against all odds for decades, and was founded in 1928 by indentured labourers who worked on the sugar plantations. We have on location, the Bright Site Project - the first rural project of its kind in the country. Third and fourth year social work students of UNISA are placed at the school . These students offer valuable support to the school and the community. Some of our outstanding achievements include two provincial awards with Isnembe Secondary winning silver at the KZN service excellence awards for 2010-2011. 2013 saw the school being awarded best mainstream school in our district(which comprises 422 schools), by the MEC for Education for Inclusive Education. We are very proud of these monumental achievements. Isnembe Secondary school may not have the best facilities, or the best classrooms- but we have spirit, commitment and dedication. We strive to instill in our learners much more than information from books. We teach them good old-fashion values like respect, honesty, manners, loyalty and the importance of being helpful. Our learners leave with fond memories, having felt cherished and appreciated; and with a sense of individuality. The Staff of Isnembe Secondary practice sound Bathe Pele principles (people first)at all times. With the little that we have, we strive to deliver and live up to our school motto: ‘Labor omnia vincit”(Labour conquers all). The blood, sweat and tears of the pioneers from the past should serve as inspiration to us all. We believe that it is this that has helped us to reach the record breaking enrolment as well as a milestone existence of close on to a century. We are a dynamic, picturesque school with a big heart and lots of soul.VISION
